Ameya has now a rating of 2428 and ranks second in Goa behind GM Anuragh Mhamal. The youngster collected eight points out of possible nine in the tournament. Ameya defeated GM Farago Ivan of Hungary, IM Kernazhitsky Leonid of Russia, WIM Kareva Natalia of Russia, and FM Pasztor Ferenc of Hungary and drew with GM Chernyshov Konstantin of Russia. He had seven wins and two draws to tally eight out of the nine rounds, and remained unbeaten.
"Winning a tournament is always good but claiming an international title is very special. It's a great moment for me as I earned my first IM norm," said Ameya. "I would like to thank God, my parents, coaches and Goa Chess Association for their constant and never ending support," Ameya said.
Ameya becomes first Goan to win an international open tournament dominated by the Russians, Ukrainians and Hungarians in his maiden overseas participation.
GCA President Nilesh Cabral has congratulated the young player.
