The Sports Authority of Goa organised its 1st State Level Sports Competitions Athletic Meet for special school children at SAG Athletic Stadium, Bambolim recently.
The first such competition of its kind will be an annual event, similar to the normal schools sports programmes. The initiative by SAG is in line with the Chief Minister’s budget speech in the Goa Assembly in 2017 regarding promotion of sports for special children. Sports Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar declared the meet open in the presence of SAG executive director V M Prabhudesai and assured the government’s full cooperation and support for
the cause.
In all, 22 schools for special children from across the State took part in the event with 900 special athletes competing in intellectually disabled (ID) and hearing impaired (HI) categories in different track and field events.
FC Goa coach Sergio Lobera along with his assistant Derrick Pereira were special guests and awarded medals and certificates to the winning athletes. Fr Maverick of Caritas Goa, Veena Shekwalkar, principal of Disha Special School, Sr Monica, Principal of St Xavier Special School, Old Goa, Girish Lotlikar, president of GBA and Sandeep Heble, secretary of GBA were also present at the event.
Sports in various disciplines under this programme will continue throughout
the year.
