Goa’s brother-sister duo Dayne Coelho and Katya Coelho along with father and Coach Donald Coelho have on Friday left for Jakarta to represent India in the upcoming Asian Games.
Donald Coelho, a holder of three national titles from 2010 - 2012 has been selected as the coach of his children Dayne and Katya who will be the only Goans and Indians representing India at the Asian championship in windsurfing.
Dayne Coelho has done India proud at the 37th Singapore Open windsurfing championship by winning the silver and bronze early this year in RS :one class.
Speaking to the media, Dayne Coelho informed that the brother sister duo would be participating
in the windsurfing games
in the under-22 category and would be a series of 12
races.
Dayne also informed that he has been working for this event for the last 4 years and after a silver and bronze medal in Singapore, he felt confident and aimed to win a medal for India in the Olympics within the next few years. Meanwhile, Katya Coelho said that more Goans should take up the game of wind surfing.
The duo felt that the government should lay down some infrastructure to help the sport so that the expensive equipment involved in the sport could be protected from wear and tear.
Dayne also said that support from the government came only around two years ago and prior to that all expenses were borne from their own pockets.
