Calangute Association Sports Club trounced Vasco Sports Club by a comfortable 4-1 margin in their Goa Professional League match, organised by Goa Football Association, at Duler Stadium, here
on Friday.
Sanjay Vengurlekar drew the first blood for Calangute Association in the first session before Blake Haldankar, Ashok Megheri and Jayganesh Goltekar pumped in three more goals. Franky Oliveiro scored the consolation goal for the Port Towners. After the win, Calangute went to the 4th position with 25 points from 18 outings, while Vasco have 17 points from 18 matches.
Calangute coach Alex Alvares fielded defender Mayur Shelar and U-20 striker Sanjay Vengurlekar to replace suspended Josley Dias and Omkar Satelkar in his starting line-up after their last league match against Panjim Footballers. At the other end, Vasco in-charge Eban Mesquita brought two changes by starting with Treyson D’Costa and Leny Fernandes after their defeat to Goan FC in the previous round match.
In the first 15 minutes, both sides played at a fast pace, but the defences did not break under pressure. However in the 16th minute, Vasco defender Minesh Kunkolkar failed to clear Joston Pereira’s long ball and an overlapping Calangute U-20 striker Sanjay finished the ball into the nets, 1-0.
The Calangute outfit had two more chances to further consolidate their lead. At the half-hour mark, Joston Pereira dangerously moved inside the box and latched on a left-footer which was brilliantly blocked by Vasco keeper Amit Biswas. In the very next minute, once again keeper Amit came to his team’s rescue as he superbly parried Joston’s goal-bound shot.
At the other end, Vasco too had two chances to wipe out the one-goal deficit. Striker Franky Oliveiro missed an open header from close range off Anil Gaoncar’s pin-point cross, while in the closing stages of the first session, another chance went begging for the Port Towners when Anil made a lay-off to Guinean midfielder Vaseeba Toure in the box but the latter failed to connect from close with just the keeper at his mercy.
Down by a goal, the Port Towners started the second session in attacking fashion, when Anil once again found Franky in the box with a superb cross but the latter failed to keep his header inside the goal framework. In the 55th minute, Calangute struck their second goal when their left-back Bonny Niasso squared the ball to his team-mate Blake Haldankar who made no mistake to put the ball into the empty net, 2-0.
Minutes later, Bonny’s strike was pushed for a corner by Vasco keeper Amit Das. However in the 81st minute, keeper Amit did not collect a ball cleanly after Calangute substitute Ashok Megheri hit a header off Newton Azavedo’s cross, where the substitute tapped in the loose ball to make it 3-0 for his side.
At the other end, Vasco had two good chances to reduce the margin in the dying minutes of the match. Franky’s shot from close was pushed away by Calangute keeper Jason D’Mello, while substitute Micky Fernandes’ 25-yarder free kick hit the crossbar.
After two quick attacks, Vasco finally reduced the margin in the 89th minute when Micky dribbled past a couple of defenders and sent a low cross to an unmarked Franky, who tapped the ball into the nets to make it 3-1 for Vasco. In the added-on time, Calangute pumped in their fourth goal through substitute Jaiganesh Goltekar, who headed in from close off Newton’s
cross, 4-1.
