Calangute Association showed character in a stunning 1-0 win over table-toppers Dempo Sports Club in the GFA Pro League at Duler grounds, Mapusa on Friday.
It was a sweet revenge for Calangute Asssocaition who hat had lost to their opponents by 3-1 margin in the first leg. Despite the loss, Dempo remain on top of the table ahead of debutants FC Bardez who are tied with 19 points. However, Dempo displaced Bardez with a better goal difference from 10 matches, while Calangute have 12 points from 8 matches.The all-imprtant goal of the match came in the 12th minute of the first half when rival striker Josely Dias unleashed a snap shot just outside the rival penalty box which crashed into the net leaving goalkeeper Priyant Singh dazed under the Dempo bar.
Stung by that setback, Dempo Sports Club came back with a more organized mindset as they produced two scroing chances. First, Bevan D'Mello's cross from a zero angle was parried away by Calangute Association goalkeeper Melroy Ferandes and a few minutes later Nigerian striker Felix Odili Chiddi outwitted couple of rival defenders and shot straight into the safe hands of Calangute Association goalkeeper Melroy Fernandes.
The match came alive only in the last quarter as in the 85th minute, a flag kick taken by by Gabriel Fernandes was brilliantly headed in by Adil Khan at the goal, only to find keeper Melroy Fernandes bringing up suberb saves to send the Calangute Assocation supporters into delirium.
