Churchill Brothers Sports Club tore into Santa Cruz Club, Cavelossim with a 5-0 demolition in a round seven match of the Goa Professional League clash at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa on Friday. At half time, Churchill led 2-0.
The end result was an utter rout but Cavelossim did manage to make some threatening moves but their attackers lacked the edge in front of the goal. In the 10th minute, Joshua Vaz attempted to open the scoring but his shot was kept out by Churchill keeper Aliston Fernandes.
For the Red Machines, Nicholas Fernandes turned out to be the hero of the match as he scored a brace, including the opener in the 29th minute. Seriton Fernandes scored in the added-on time of the first session while substitute Yendrenbam Metei scored two late goals in the 88th and 90th minute.
Within two minutes of the opener, Churchill Brothers' Manfred Fernandes was injured as he toppled over a rival player and needed medical attention. The injured player was subsequently replaced by Kamaldeep Singh in the 39th minute. Seriton made it 2-0, sending home a perfect ball off a cross by Nicholas.
After the lemon break, SCC Cavelossim made a double substitution pulling out Mathew Colaco and Floyd Fernandes for Clencio Pinto and Edberg Sequeira respectively. A minute later, Edberg made a move for the goal but was thwarted by the rival goalkeeper.
In the 80th minute, Nicholas collected the ball from just outside the box and sent a curler into the far corner of the nets to make it 3-0. Just 12 minutes after coming on the pitch, Yendrenbam tapped home the ball in the 88th minute. The pacey lad had enough time to add another as the Greens walked off 5-0 winners at Duler. Churchill now sit pretty on the Pro League heap with 15 points from seven matches.
