Cuncolim Union prevailed over Maina Sports Club 5-4 via tiebreaker to enter the semi-finals of All Goa 18th Eulalio Vaz memorial inter village football tournament organised by Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda at Don Bosco Engineering ground, Fatorda on Friday. The teams were tied 2-2 at full time.
Both the teams showed attacking intent and in the 2nd minute, Cuncolim Union created a scare for the opposition when veteran defender Krishna Shirodkar found central defender Micky Fernandes free inside the penalty box but the latter shot kissed the crossbar, much to the disappointment of Cuncolim supporters. At the other end, two minutes later, Maina missed a chance when Clive Colaco's free kick long ranger grazed the upright and went out.
Cuncolim Union's breakthrough came in the 26th minute when Micky Fernandes' well executed free kick beat the rival goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Maina neutralised the lead through Joy Hilario. Stunned by the equaliser, Cuncolim Union intensified their attacks and Micky Fernandes regained the lead in the 28th minute.
Post resumption, Maina put up a dominant show and made a couple of sorties in the opposition half. Sertorio Monteiro cancelled the lead with a stiff shot. Both the teams went all out but it yielded no winner in the regulation time. Cuncolim Union had the last laugh in the penalty shootout.
