Shane Dias, former treasurer and promoter of KJs and Sonics clubs, was elected unopposed as the president of the Goa Basketball Association (GBA) at its elections held during the AGM on Saturday.
The returning officer, Adv Dene Rosario, in the presence of Chengalraya Naidu Talipinani (Babu), Basketball Federation of India (BFI) joint-secretary and the BFI observer, Mahesh Rivonkar “ Sports Authority of Goa’s director programmes, the SAG observer, and Akhil Parrikar “the observer from Goa Olympic Association (GOA), declared the results after a month-long election process.
The elections were held for the next term 2021 to 2025. These are the first elections held under the newly amended constitutions, with the considerations given by SAI, MYAS, and BFI. Under the new framework, GBA now has two district-registered district associations, nine active clubs that have organised basketball events, 18 clubs of men and women that participate at events, and 12 schools and institutions, that have participated in basketball events in Goa.
The GBA secretary Fr Ralin De Souza pointed out that despite the challenging time for sports due to the pandemic for over 18 months, GBA president Girish Lotliker has managed to sort out many issues, such as the registration of the association, amendment of the constitutions, etc. These changes will help develop basketball in Goa for years to come, and the basketball fraternity will be indebted to him for his pivotal role, De Souza said.
The other elected members of the managing committee are: vice-presidents - Maria Helena Pinto, Sumeet Tendulkar, Luis Gomes; secretary - Fr Ralin De Souza; treasurer - James Andrade; joint-secretary - Royston Costa; executive members - Joanita Fernandes, Sydney Furtado, Sandeep Heble and Amey Joshi.
