Fozail, Divyanshu, Manisha, Riya top at AVCC inter school Table tennis tournament

Fozail Ahmad, Divyanshu Barnal, Manisha Singh and Riya Indwar emerged winners in the MB United Sports and Cultural Club Cuncolim organized AVCC Inter School Table Tennis tournament held recently at the Multipurpose Stadium, Fatorda.

The inaugural edition of the AVCC interschool tournament series saw the participation of eight schools from Cuncolim, Chinchinim, Assolna, and Velim villages, with players vying for top honours in the Under-14 and Under-17 categories in both the boys and girl’s section.

The tournament was held in cooperation with Goa Table Tennis Association (GTTA)

In the U17 boys Fozail defeated Arnold Fernandes 3-2 (9-11, 11-3, 5-11, 12-10, 11-5).

In the U14 boys, Divyanshu stormed to an easy 3-0 (11-9, 13-11, 11-5) win over Rohan Harijan.

In the U17 girls, Manisha got the better of Nikita Coutinho 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-4).

In the U14 girls, Riya defeated Makalya Furtado 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 11-3).

52 students from 8 schools from AVCC participated in this tournament. The schools which took part included Cuncolim United High School, Cuncolim, Infant Jesus HS Cuncolim, Our lady of Health HS Cuncolim, Maria Bambina Convent HS Cuncolim, St Rock HS Tollecanto Velim, St Anthony HS Veroda Cuncolim, Assumpta Convent HS Sarzora and Mount Mary’s HS Chinchinim.

Sudin Verenker President GTTA declared the tournament open in the presence of president Rohan Dessai, Secretary Oscar Martins and Organizing Chairman Kenan Almeida and other members of MB United Sports and Cultural Club Murida Cuncolim.

Dr Brennan Tavares table tennis lover and promoter was the chief guest and Santosh Verenker member GTTA was guest of honour for the valedictory function.

Oscar Martins Secretary compered the function and proposed the vote of thanks

This initiative forms an integral part of GTTA’s grassroots program to identify young talents from schools across Goa who might not generally participate in State Ranking events, but who possess immense potential to excel.

“Our focus is to broadbase the sport by taking the game to every corner of Goa. Through such inter-school tournaments, we aim to encourage wider participation and discover hidden talent that can be nurtured for the state and national level. The South Goa Table Tennis District Council will take up the next leg of the initiative in Margao, with other affiliated clubs to follow suit in their respective regions,” stated GTTA President, Sudin Verenkar.

U17 boys: Fozail Ahmad bt Arnold Fernandes 3-2 (9-11, 11-3, 5-11, 12-10, 11-5).

U14 boys: Divyanshu Barnal bt Rohan Harijan 3-0 (11-9, 13-11, 11-5)

U17girls: Manisha Singh Nikita Coutinho 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-4).

U14 girls: Riya Indwar bt Makalya Furtado 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 11-3).
