Top-seeded GM Shyam Sunder (2488) of Tamil Nadu won the Hotel Calangute Tower All Rapid Rating Chess Tournament organized by Mormugao Taluka Chess Association, held at Centenary Hall, Baina, Vasco with 8 points at the end of 9 rounds. The winner received a prize money of Rs 25,000 and a winners trophy.
Goa's Ritviz Parab (2163) of Geno Pharma of Goa stood second with 8 points on a lower tie breaker score. IM Abhimanyu Puranik (2208) of Maharashtra, whop also scored 8 points but with a lower tie breaker tally, stood third.
GM Shyam Sunder won 7 games and was held for a draw by Goa’s IM Rohan Ahuja (2149) of Geno Pharma and Chander Raju (1840) of Kerala. Ritviz Parab won 8 games and lost one game to Gahan M G (2296) of Karnataka.
Goa's up and coming player Amey Audi defeated GM Tejas Bhakre and IM Abhimanyu Puranik while scoring 7 points but stood seventh. Rohan Ahuja defeated GM Tejas Bhakre in the 6th round and held winner Shyam Sunder for a draw to secure an 8th place finish. The second GM of the tournament, Tejas Bhakre, suffered defeats from Rohan and Amey and had to settle for 11th position.
In all, seven players from Goa finished in the prize list as it was a good performance by the local players and 22 players got rating in this tournament. Subramanian T V of Tamil Nadu, who won the veteran prize, stole the limelight playing the tournament at the age of 83.
