The Goa team suffered an 87-run defeat against the formidable Mumbai side in the Vijay Hazare Elite Cricket Tournament, on Wednesday.
Although the margin of defeat was large, Goa were not the team who were to go down without a fight as the side put up a brave performance against the neighbouring state. Chasing Mumbai's massive total of 444 for 8 in 50 overs, Goa responded creditably by scoring 357 for 9. The match was played at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur.
Goa won the toss and invited Mumbai to bat first. The Goa bowlers rarely allowed Mumbai's top order to settle. However, Sarfaraz Khan, batting at number four, launched a fierce assault on the Goa bowling unit. In a spectacular innings of 157 runs off just 75 balls, he struck 9 fours and cleared the boundary rope with an astonishing 14 sixes.
Wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore, who came in to bat at number seven, smashed 53 runs off 28 balls. For Goa, Darshan Misal was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while V. Koushik and Lalit Yadav claimed two wickets each.
In reply, Arjun Tendulkar and Kashyap Bakhale opened the innings for Goa. Lalit Yadav scored 64 runs and, along with Abhinav, added a crucial 117-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Abhinav Tejrana smashed a brilliant 100 off just 70 deliveries, as the swashbuckling batsman continued his red hot form with 5 fours and 8 sixes. Deepraj Gaonkar also got into the act as the skipper played a blistering knock of 70 runs off just 28 balls, which included 4 fours and 7 sixes. Shardul Thakur was the most successful bowler for the opposition team, as the Indian international player took 3 wickets for 20 runs.
With this defeat, Goa has slipped to third place in Group C with 12 points. Goa will play Uttarakhand on January 3 in their next outing.
