DULER
Calangute Association registered a well deserved 2-0 win over Guardian Angel Sports Club in the Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, here on Tuesday.
The North Goa side came back strongly in the second session to pump in two goals through Mohammed Shashad and Runal Shirodkar to give all three points for their team and register their second win in the ongoing league.
Calangute, who were trounced by Salgaocar in the last match, saw their coach Augustino make two changes to their side as Rup Dad and Akash Sanadi made into the stating XI. At the other end, Angel also had a similar number of changes following a draw against Corps of Signals in the last match as Clinton Niasso and keeper Jeet Gupta found their names in the starting XI for the Curchorem-based club.
After the first quarter was restricted to midfield play, the teams came with an attack each. Calangute’s Akash sent a teasing cross to Diptesh in the box but the striker failed to put power in his header as Angel keeper Gupta made a fine collection. At the other end, Angel also had a chance where a corner by Clinton was brilliantly headed by Micky Vaz at the goal but Calangute keeper Savio Paes
blocked it.
After the half hour mark, Calangute had two more opportunities for taking the lead. Dominic Fernandes curled the ball to an onrushing striker Diptesh in the box but the latter’s diving header was acrobatically pushed for a corner by Angel custodian Gupta. Minutes later, winger Sachidanand Satelkar made a darting run from the left flank and drilled a shot at the goal from inside the box but his strike missed the target by a few inches.
On crossing ends, once again the teams restricted play inside the midfield for the first quarter. In the 61st minute, Angel had the best chance to break the deadlock when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box. However Nicholas Rodrigues’ strike was brilliantly saved by the Calangute keeper.
While Angel failed to score, at the other end the beachside took the lead as their striker Shashad dribbled past two defenders and shot from inside the box which deflected off Angel defender James Fernandes and beat an onrushing keeper Gupta in
the goal.
As the match progressed, Calangute’s Sachidanand missed two open sitters. However, in the 75th minutes, substitute midfielder Runal Shirodkar extended the lead for the beachside unit when Dominic’s perfect through pass was clinically finished at the far post to make
it 2-0.
In the last 10 minutes of the regulation time, Calangute had three more good chances to inflate their lead but Dominic’s shot was brilliantly blocked by Angel keeper Gupta, while Sachidanand and Sanket failed to keep their shots on target.
