MARGAO

Goa Velha SC began their campaign in the 25th Fr Basilio Andrade Memorial Football Tournament with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Sao Jose de Areal SC in an exciting opening encounter organised by Associacao Academica de Majorda Utorda Calata.

Goa Velha SC took an early lead through Sohan Kavlekar in the third minute, but Areal responded through Josley, who scored twice to put his side 2-1 ahead by the 10th minute.

Kavlekar opened the scoring after collecting a throw-in from the right, holding off his marker and slotting the ball into the far corner.

Areal equalised when Josley capitalised on space in midfield to beat the advancing goalkeeper. In the 10th minute, Fenoish broke down the left and cut the ball back for Josley, who fired home with a first-time effort to give Areal the lead.

Goa Velha fought back, with Soham narrowly missing the target after receiving a pass from Mohit. Soham restored parity in the 22nd minute, weaving past two defenders before guiding a left-footed shot into the far corner.

Goa Velha completed the turnaround a minute later when Mohit kept the ball in play near the byline. His intended pass for Joseph Rodrigues found Sainath, who took a couple of touches before calmly finding the far corner to make it 3-2.

The second half saw Areal push hard for an equaliser, creating several opportunities, but Goa Velha held firm to secure all three points.

Former Sesa Goa stalwart Anthony Fernandes, popularly known as Daam, was the chief guest and formally kicked off the tournament. He also presented the Man of the Match award to Josley of Sao Jose de Areal SC for his two-goal performance.
