IFA (West Bengal) registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over holders Orissa to enter the semi-finals of the Junior Girls National Football Championship, played at Duler stadium, here on Monday.
Holders Orissa dictated terms right from the start but their strikers failed to put the ball inside the goal framework. In the 25th minute, a scorching right-footer from Manisha Naik rebounded of the IFA post and the ball travelled to Jasoda Munda who shot wide off
the target.
On crossing ends, in the 61st minute a low cross by IFA’s medio Padma Mandi saw overlapping Devneta Roy beat the onrushing Orissa keeper Sanjukta Tirkey with a neat placement. Down by a goal Orissa, time and again attacked the rival citadel but failed to score.
In the 86th minute, Manisha sent a square pass to unmarked Soni Behera but the latter failed to connect the ball inside the open goal. Two minutes before the final hooter, Manisha’s shot from close was brilliantly blocked by IFA’s defender Rani Bhowmick.
In the morning quarter-finals match, Tamil Nadu trounced Bihar by 12-0 margin also to take the semis spot.
Tamil Nadu were indeed the better side where they never allowed their opponents to settle and went into the breather leading by 8-0 margin.
Mariyammal B did most of the damage scoring five goals, with Santhiya NV (2), Iswarya S (2), Durga A, Priyadhardshini S and Minnoliya S accounting for the other goals.
