Stating that the renovation of the swimming pool at the Peddem Complex in Mapusa is  not a top priority of the government, Director of Sports VM Prabhudesai on Friday said that only the basic maintenance of the pool would be taken up.

This, despite majority of the medals coming from Peddem Complex students.

“We are renovating the Panjim and Fatorda swimming pools. We have to garner additional funds for upkeep of this (Mapusa) pool.

The government will have to take a call on it. We will impress on the government,” VM Prabudessai said.

The director of sports was addressing a group of concerned parents while inspecting the badly maintained swimming pool at the Peddem Complex in Mapusa.

Assuring the parents to tackle all their demands

in the coming days, Prabhudesai said that the

swimming pool was growing old and needed a complete overhaul.

Giving in to the demands of the parents, the director also instructed the pool in-charge to send a report after every fifteen days on the condition of the pool.

The director of sports had to face a flurry of complaints from parents whose wards use the swimming pool.

A parent stated that kids were falling ill due to unclean water in the pool while another complained that the girl’s toilet was in bad shape.

Another parent disclosed that the pool attendants were not using chlorine but low grade bleaching powder to clean the pool.

The parents also blamed the staff and pool attendants for failing to carry out proper maintenance of the swimming pool.

General Secretary Syad Abdul Majid brought to the attention of the director that only one pump was available at the pool.

He also demanded a shade on the top gallery of the swimming pool.

Surprisingly, the water in the swimming pool looked clean when the director visited the place on Friday.

The parents informed the director that the water was clean but it was only because of his arrival.

“Today the water looks clean but otherwise it is

dark green in colour and one could not see the floor of the pool,” a parent said.

Sources informed The Goan that pool attendants worked overtime last night to

clean the pool and make

it ready to welcome the

director.
