Mount Mary's, Nagoa scored a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rebello Pandal, Maina to win the Amblai Youth Panchwadi seven-a-side football tournament, held in memory of late Armstrong, at Mattem ground, Amblai, Panchwadi, on Monday.
Mount Mary's started off brightly and created some half chances early on but their forwards failed to capitailise. At the other end, Rebello Pandal created a couple of chances but their forwards were guilty of failing to convert the
chances.
Crossing over, Mount Mary's returned stronger and dominated possession entirely, creating a couple of close chances. Mount Mary's finally broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Benjamin slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Stung by the setback, Rebello Pandal kept the pressure on the Mount Mary's backline with some well orchestrated moves. However the Nagoa team defended deep and did not allow the rival attackers to manoeuvre inside their territory. Rebello Pandal lifted their game in the final minutes but their efforts of scoring the equaliser produced no dividends as Mount Mary's secured a well deserved 1-0 victory.
Mount Mary's, Nagoa were richer by Rs 25,000 while Rebello Pandal had to settle for Rs 15,000.
Xavier D'Costa, ex-footballer was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Flavian Rodrigues, Valencia Estibeiro and other dignitaries.
