The Annual Day of the St Xavier’s Academy, Old Goa was held in the form of a Sports Day for the first time on December 12. The Sports meet was declared open by Victor Vaz, National Director Special Olympics (Bharat) who was the judge for the day.
The dignitaries and guests were welcomed by Marinele Filinto which was followed by the March Past. The torch was lit followed by the relay by four athletes and the Sportsman’s Oath was taken by Master Arnold D’Souza.
Sr Monica Coelho, the Principal then gave a detailed report of the year’s activities and expressed her joy at being able to organise the sports meet for the first time. She highlighted that the academy secured 100 per cent results at the SSC exams of the Goa Board for the past six consecutive years. She also informed that two students namely Vinay Ghadge & Rachel Fernandes won gold and bronze medals at the Special Olympics in Los Angeles.
The sports items comprised walks, sprints, laziums, aerobics, pyramids, various types of drills like colourful, feather, umbrella, a ball dance and a beautiful formation of the Christmas Star involving the whole school where Sr Meena Dias gave the inspiring message for Christmas.
The 4x100 metres relay of boys and girls was well appreciated. It is significant to note that every child of the academy was on the ground participating in one or the other item. The championship rolling trophy was won by the Red House.

Fr Maverick Fernandes, Manager, thanked the principal who geared the staff and the students towards the success of the day. He also thanked the parents for reposing faith in the academy. "Our academy creates opportunities for the overall development of the special children," Fr Fernandes concluded. The comperes were teachers Maria D’Souza and Joel Rodrigues and Evadeane Cardoso proposed the vote of thanks.
