SANGUEM
The remote Netravali village in Sanguem erupted into celebration with local youth Babu Gaonkar winning a gold medal and a silver medal in modern pentathlon at the 37th National Games.
While Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh to Babu Gaonkar, local panchayat member Rakhi Naik announced a cash award of Rs 50,000 to Babu. Naik also announced a felicitation function in the village on December 19.
Congratulating Babu on his achievement, Rakhi lauded Babu Gaonkar for making the village proud and for being a role model to the local youth.
The panch also appealed to the State government to take cognisance of the laurels achieved by Babu Gaonkar and provide necessary sports facilities in remote villages so that youth get desired training to excel in varied sports disciplines.
