An inspired show from Salgaocar Football Club gave the side a 2-0 win over Daimalu Club of BTAD, securing their passage to the quarterfinals league of 4th CEM Gold Cup 2019. Salgaocar led 1-0 at the break in the match played at KASA Stadium in Diphu, Assam. The tournament is organised by Karbi Anglong Sports Association.
Salgaocar, who had won their first match against Assam Police Blues, progressed as the winners of Cluster I after their second win. Salgaocar will now meet Nepal’s Sankata Club in the quarterfinals league on March 5.
On Sunday, the Greens from Goa exerted continuous pressure on the Daimalu defence. Sturdy striker Denil Rebello showed vision to feed the other attackers as he moved the strings for Salgaocar. The Goan team’s breakthrough came when Selwyn Rodrigues headed home off a well-measured cross from Denil.
A delighted Salgaocar coach Anthony Levino Pereira said he was more than pleased with his side’s performance against a team he considered a tough opposition. “We stood firm under attack. We did very well to get a 1-0 lead at half time and the boys did well to secure the win and qualify for the next stage,” he said.
