Salgaocar Football Club trounced Corps of Signals 5-0 in the Goa Professional League, organised by GFA, at Duler stadium here on Sunday.
After the big victory, Salgaocar FC stand on 6th position with 29 points from 16 matches, while Corps of Signals stand on 9th position with 18 points from 19 matches.
After playing an outstanding match against Vasco Sports Club, whom they had thrashed by a 7-1 margin, the Green Brigade went all out to gain full points from the match. Norbert Gonsalves played with the same squad that featured in their last league match. At the other end, the coach of Army men, Sub Rateesh R, after their 3-1 defeat to Dempo Sports Club in their last league match, brought two changes in his starting line-up -- Pawan Thakur and U-20 player Rudresh Madrekar, who was brought in place of injured U-20 player Cyril Dias.
In the very 10th minute, a fine cross from the right flank by Pawan Thakur found Harshad Thobe fumble to connect from a goalmouth melee. At the other end, in the very next minute a curling corner by U-20 Stephen Alvares travelled to an unmarked Yinka Joel Sunday, whose header went just over the goal post.
In the 15th minute, the match was stopped for almost three minutes with Signals’ Th Roshan Singh laying prostrate on the ground after being elbowed by Salgaocar’s Umesh Harijan. But surprisingly, the act was overlooked by referee Rohidas Bhomkar, who after consulting his assistant Sainath Haldankar, did not feel it right even to caution
the player.
The next twenty minutes of the match was restricted to midfield with the keepers being hardly tested. Finally in the 35th minute, Sanson Pereira sent a low cross at the far post to his overlapping skipper Gilbert Oliveira, who tapped it into the goal, 1-0. Just four minutes later, the Green Brigade extended their lead when a curling cross by Stephen Alvares was tapped into the goal by Sanson Pereira after Devendra Murgaonkar had failed to connect, 2-0.
On crossing ends, the Signals coach brought two fresh pair of legs from the bench, Vishnu Chetri and Lairellakpam Singh, to further strengthen their attack. In the 55th minute, Signals player Roshan set up Rudreh Madrekar inside the penalty box but the latter shot out from close.
Salgaocar had a chance to further inflate their lead in the 60th minute but Devendra Murgaonkar failed to get past Signals keeper Binu Purushotham in a one to one situation. However the Green Brigade hammered in two quick goals in the 65th minute. Devendra was at the right place at the right time to just nod the ball into the goal off a cross from Mackroy Peixoto. In the 71st minute Joel Sunday controlled a long floater from Gilbert Oliveria and placed it into the far corner of the goal, 4-0.
The best chance for Signals came in the 68th minute but a strike by Roshan hit the far post which was then collected by keeper S Rajini Kumar. In the closing stages of the match, Signals keeper Binu brought two out of the blue saves to deny Gilbert Oliveria and Agnelo Colaco from scoring. However in the added-on time, Agnelo Colaco fired in the fifth goal from a direct free kick, 5-0.
