Panaji Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Sports Minister Babu Ajgaonkar praised the 26-year-old Anand for his fantastic performance in taekwondo over more than a decade. P Anand is the eighth recipient of the Sardesai award instituted in 2008, to encourage excellence among sports persons of international calibre. The government honour comprises of a bronze plaque of the former India cricket star Dilip Sardesai, and two lakh rupees. In his acceptance speech, Anand thanked his parents and coach Sunil Sharma in particular for shaping his career. He expressed his desire to keep winning medals at the international level and represent India at the Olympics. Parrikar praised Anand and also highlighted the need of grooming talented youngsters for excellence. He instructed Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, V M Prabhudesai to formulate a policy to take under their wings five youngsters who have great potential, and fund them for high level training, on an annual basis.
