Agxem SC advanced to the semifinals of the Silver Jubilee Cup 2025 Inter-ward Football Tournament with a dominant 5-1 victory over Damdolem SC at the St Alex Church ground, Curtorim, on Sunday. The tournament is organised by Sporting Club Virabhat.

Damdolem SC opened the scoring early through Jaibon Hilario in the 10th minute. Agxem SC responded quickly, with Michael Paes equalising in the 15th minute. Alroy Gomes then gave Agxem the lead in the 20th minute, making it 2-1 by halftime.

In the second half, Agxem SC took full control. Jovel Martins netted twice in the 35th and 40th minutes, widening the lead to 4-1. Joel Paes added a fifth goal in the 45th minute to complete the rout.

Jovel Martins was named Man of the Match for his brace and overall performance. The award was presented by Jose Castanha, a member of Sporting Club Virabhat.

St Anthony Festival Cup in July

MARGAO: The 18th edition of the St Anthony Festival Cup 2025, organised by the St Anthony Sports Club Assolda, is set to begin in the first week of July at the Moll Ground, Assolda.

The popular football tournament, now in its 18th year, will feature competitive local teams vying for attractive prizes. The winners will take home Rs 60,000 and a trophy, while the runners-up will receive Rs 40,000 and a trophy. Several individual awards will also be presented for outstanding performances throughout the tournament. Teams interested in participating can contact the organisers, Custodio Fernandes, Victorino Fernandes, or Christo Fernandes.

Football community bids farewell to Zeferino Fernandes

MARGAO: Prominent members of Goa’s football community and State dignitaries came together on Sunday to bid farewell to Jose Zeferino Fernandes, father of Dr Caitano Fernandes, President of the Goa Football Association (GFA).

The funeral proceedings began at Zeferino’s residence in Assolda, where a large number of people gathered to pay their last respects. His body was taken to St Anthony’s Chapel, Assolda for a solemn Eucharistic celebration before being laid to rest at Cotombi Cemetery.

Though unable to attend in person, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral and Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa sent floral tributes along with condolence messages.

The funeral was attended by several dignitaries from the footballing community, including Alberto Colaco, former General Secretary of the All India Football Federation, and Anthony Pango, Senior Vice President of GFA. Also present were Jonathan D’Souza (GFA Vice President, North Goa), Schubert Furtado (GFA Treasurer), and GFA executive members Anthony Leo Fernandes, Cosme Oliveira, Andrew Ferrao, Patwin Fijardo, Costao Paul Fernandes, and Kustodio Fernandes. Adlear D’Cruz, General Secretary of the GFA, was also in attendance.
