Snow’s Football Academy, Raia defeated Chandor Club 7-6 on penalties after being held 3-3 at full time to win the South Goa McDowell’s No 1 Yaari Cup inter village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union at Government School ground, Cuncolim on Sunday. The highlight of the match was a splendid hat-trick by Llyod Cardozo.

In the pulsating final, the teams entertained the packed Sunday crowd with some attacking football at either end. Snow’s were on the attack and forged ahead in the 4th minute when striker Llyod scored off an assist from Jaison Martins. Chandor responded with attacks of their own and drew level in the 7th minute when Frazier Gomes finished a pass from Sunny Fernandes.

The equaliser boosted Chandor and they took the lead in the 19th minute when Sunny Fernandes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot off Succorro Fernandes’ measured pass. Spurred by the lead, Chandor upped the ante and Sunny struck again off a Joaquim Carvalho pass. Snow’s woke up from their slumber after trailing 1-3, and in the 31st minute, Llyod reduced the deficit when he found the roof of the net off Siano Fernandes.

The first bit of real action after the change of ends came in the 45th minute when Oilex Olveira turned the other way and found striker Lylod, who scored his hat-trick in the 45th minute, 3-3. Visibly tired, the teams slowed down the pace and adopted a safety-first approach and the match ended 3-3 at full time.

In the penalty shootout, Oilex Olveira, Sockky Cardozo, Vellington Fernandes and Anthony Dias converted for Snow’s, while Irfan Yadward, Akram Yadward and Joaquim Carvalho found the mark for Chandor Club.

Quepem MLA and opposition leader Chandrakant Kavlekar was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guests of honour, Elvis Gomes, president of GFA; Sushil Sharma, State head, Goa, Diageo India; Kshitij Shetye, customer manager, Dieago India; Mahendra Shirbate, South Goa team lead, Diageo India; Joseph Dias, manager of VJT Events, Chinchinim; and Prakash Dessai, president of Cuncolim Union.
