St Anthony's Sports Club, Assolda downed St Anthony's Sports Club, Marna-Siolim 2-0 to romp into the semi-finals of All Goa Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Cana Benaulim Sporting Association at St John the Baptist Dando-grounds, Benaulim on Thursday. There was no score at half time.
St Anthony's Sports Club started the game in an attacking fashion with midfielder Joel Fernandes, son of late Dempo footballer Baptist Fernandes harrassing the rival defenders with his speed and dash and unleashed two shots that missed the target narrowly.
At the other end, St Anthony's Sports Club were not bogged down by the pressure from the rivals as they did not allow the rival attackers to score.
Post resumption, St Anthony's Sports Club showed the urgency and attacked the rival goal with sporadic raids.
Persistent forays paid dividends and in the 53rd minute, Sunny Fernandes was brought down by rival defender and the referee without any hesitation awarded the spot kick.
The resultant spot kick taken by Kevin Vaz sent the Siolim goalkeeper the wrong way. Spurred by the lead, St Anthony's Sports Club upped the ante and swarmed all over the rival territory and their insurance goal came five minutes before the long whistle when Sunny Fernandes punted the ball to the far corner of the net.
