St Anthony's High School Monte de Guirim emerged champions at the Bardez Taluka level Sub-junior Nehru Hockey tournament for U-15 boys played at Peddem Sports Complex, Mapusa on
Thursday.
In the finals they defeated St Joseph's High School, Calangute via shoot-out 3-2 after both the teams were levelled at 1-1 at the end of the regular time. Nitesh Kullu gave the lead to the Guirim School in the first half while Aadesh Solanki equalised in the second half of the match. In the shootout, Rohan Torask
ar, Vincent D'souza and Ritesh Kullu converted for St Anthony's High School while Steavam D'silva and Raimon Kerketta converted for St Joseph's High School. Fr Romeo Fernandes, Headmaster of St Anthony's High School, Guirim was the chief guest. Fr Domingos Ferrao, manager of the school, Redanto D'Souza ex-Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Alexander Remedious, senior hockey coach from DSYA, Eliter Fernandez, Victor Albuquerque (both SAG coaches), Anthony Lobo PE teacher from St Joseph's High School, Calangute and Luino Menezes PE teacher from St Anthony's High School, Guirim were present for the certificate distribution ceremony.
Anant Sawal,Taluka Sports Organiser welcomed all the dignitaries and also proposed the vote of thanks. Fr Romeo Fernandes gave away the certificates to the winning team while Fr Domingos Ferrao gave the certificate to the runners-up team.
A total of seven teams participated in the tournament. St Anthony's HS, Guirim have now qualified to play at District level against Fr Agnel High School, Pilar September 16 at 2.30pm at the
same venue.
