Sun Moon Stars Chandor Veterans knocked out Tiswadi Veterans, via the tie-breaker 4-1 after yet another goalless match at full time, in the Brian Mendes memorial Football Championship organized by Viva North Veterans Football at Dr Gustavo Monteiro Football Stadium.
With the full-time match locked goalless, Chandor Veterans advanced into the quarter-finals with sharp shooting finding the nets on each of their strike.
Roque Carneiro walking in to take the first strike for Chandor, scored beating Tiswadi goalkeeper Yeshwant Parab, to make it 1-0.
Tiswadi reciprocated through a strike by Paul Almeida beating Chandor goalkeeper Jimmy Cardozo.
The next two penalty strikes saw Chandor’s Luis Pexito and Joaquim Dias kissing the nets while Raymond Alvaris and Vishwas Toreskar developed cold feet. Both of them failed to find the mark and sailed yards off the mark.
With the score standing 3-1 in favour of Sun Moon Stars Chandor after the third shot,Chandor’s Marcus Gomes trooped in and scored neatly beating Tiswadi goalkeeper Yeshwant Parab which ensured Chandor’s quarter-final qualification with a 4-1 victory.
Earlier in the game Tiswadi would have suffered an early setback when their defender Anand Bandodkar would have headed into his own goal, but an alert Yeshwant under the Tiswadi bar, managed to save the day for his team.
In a counter-attack, Roque Carneiro, former Sesa Goa, had a golden opportunity to put Chandor into the lead but he shot straight into the hands of the Tiswadi goalkeeper Yeshwant Parab, before an open goal.
Before the break, Tiswadi had two good opportunities to open their account, when Anand failed to tap the ball into the Chandor nets in a goalmouth melee, and then PK missed a sitter off a cross from Raymond.
In the second half, Chandor’s Luis Pexito blasted over from close range, while Chandor’s goalkeeper Jimmy Cardozo, effected two good saves.He dived full length to thwart a dangerous shot of Jayesh Mirajkar and minutes later punched out a powerful shot off Paul Almeida.
With both teams failing to capitalize the opportunities that came their way,the match ended goalless.
Chandor eventually won on tie-breaker. Sushant Naik of Tiswadi Veterans was declared the man of the match and the chief guest of the match Peter Pereira, a close friend of late Brian Mendes handed over the award after the match.
