Young swimmers from Thane-Maharashtra dominated the final day’s proceedings at the 8th Goa Swimathon, grabbing nine out of the possible 18 podium finishes in the 250 metres, one-km and two-km races. However, Goa also had something to cheer about as Tanayaa Parashar won the first place in the women’s one-km race, while Subhash Gogi won the third place in the 250m race.
Shubham Pawar of Thane won the one km and 250m race today, while coming a close second in the 10kms race yesterday. K Vijay Kumar (34) a visually-impaired swimmer from Bengaluru also won many hearts when he successfully finished the one-km race. The event was organised by Enduro Sports Goa in association with the NRB Group. A record 300 swimmers from across Goa and beyond, participated in the event this year.
Swimmers from Mumbai and Bengaluru had dominated the 5kms and 10km races on the day one. The first three swimmers in the 10 kms men’s category race, were all from Mumbai and two Bengaluru swimmers bagged first positions in other races.
Shramith Srinivas, a 16-year-old Bengaluru swimmer, won the 5kms race in the men’s category with a time of 1:20:39, while Maria Hoffmann from Berlin-Germany, won the 5kms race in the women’s category with a time of 1:59:20. Likewise, Prabhat Koli of Mumbai ( 2:49:43) beat back a stiff challenge from his compatriot Shubham Pawar (2:49:56) by just a few seconds in the 10kms men’s category race, while Melanie Martinelli of Bengaluru, won her 10kms women’s category race comfortably in 3:40:14, way ahead of her competitors.
Special mention must be made of Dhruv Batra, an above knee amputee from Bengaluru, who finished the 5km race with a very good time of 2:02:00 and Gopal Rao, also of Bengaluru, the oldest participant at age 72, finishing his 5km race in a very quick time of 2:16:31.
