As the countdown for the World Cup nears the end, the security forces were practising various physical and behavioural skills to hone their communication and approach. During a rehearsal at Nehru Stadium, DIG Vimal Kumar had a special instruction for his men in khaki -- to be courteous and polite to the visitors.
The police personnel were briefed by South Goa Superintendent of Police and other senior officers about the exact positions and duties they would be performing during the m
atches. Traffic personnel, who were also present in large numbers, were informed about on dealing with the public especially with parking arrangements. The top police brass also reviewed the security provided by personnel who will deploy a dog squad for the anti sabotage checks.
No one will be allowed to enter the stadium complex with anything except mobile phones, the police said. Women will be allowed to carry purses but only after a thorough check. Nothing that can act as a missile will be allowed, the police said. Flags can be taken but without poles.
Keeping security in mind, the first and the second tiers of the stadium will have the maximum spectators. The police have put in place a three-layered security system. The first layer will comprise cops and metal detector doors. Tickets will be checked at the main gates. The second layer on the ramps will comprise cops specially trained in crowd management. Officers in plain clothes will be stationed inside the blocks and the third layer will have NSG commandos.
Special units like Quick Response Teams, several Heavy Radio Flying Squads, the National Disaster Response Force, Health Department officials and disaster management group personnel will be on standby. A crisis command centre for emergencies will be set up inside the stadium complex. The cops in plain clothes will act as stewards. They have been trained for weeks in soft skills like people management. To prevent long queues, tickets will be colour-coded and checked at the gates.
