UC Fatorda stun Bardez Veterans

United Club Fatorda Veterans overcame Bardez Veterans 1-0 to storm into the finals of the 17th VM Salgaocar Memorial Veterans Soccer tournament organised by Prime Sports Club, Benaulim at St John the Baptist ground, Danddo, Benaulim on Saturday.

Fatorda started strongly and the sustained pressure brought an early goal for them in the 8th minute. Playmaker Remmy Baretto's flagkick was pushed away rather weakly by rival goalkeeper Jude Fernandes, which went to the lurking Fatorda striker Mithun Carvalho who headed it into the nylons to shock the Bardez supporters. Bardez were not in their elements on the day and their only good effort in the first session was a tame shot by Shailendra Misquin which went into the safe hands of Fatorda goalkeeper Hanumant Pednekar.
After the restart, Bardez showed some urgency with former India captain Bruno Coutinho and Alexander Fernandes combining to pressurise the rival defence. Fatorda defender Mario Pereira, Agnelo Araujo and Jack Fernandes were rock solid and protected the slender lead.

FIFA tells India to spend on football, not frills
