Velsao Sports & Cultural Club edged past a gritty Corps of Singals 1-0 in the GFA Goa Professional League, in a match played at SAG ground, Utorda on Thursday.

Velsao, who had lost to Dempo SC 1-0 in their previous match, started in their usual attacking fashion but could not score due to inept finishing by their forwards. At the other end, Corps of Signals held on and weathered the Velsao attacks in the first half, which ended goalless despite plenty of action.

The Signals were on the floor but never fell short of fighting spirit. And on occasion, Flan Gomes and Jseloy Moniz took some initiative while Signals defender Kuldeep Singh was always equal to the task with his composure and conviction. The closest they came to scoring was when Harprat Shubhey found himself with a chance in front of the Velsao goal but he shot wide, much to the dismay of Corps of Signals supporters.

Post resumption, Velsao kept hunting for a breakthrough and Corps of Signals kept denying them in a plan to thwart the relentless pressing. Velsao struck the decisive winner in the 59th minute when Jesloy Moniz picked up a through ball from Flan Gomes and slotted past rival goalkeeper Niyas Mon with a snap shot.

Flan Gomes did well for himself and the team. He had a few scoring chances, including a one-on-one effort and later his shot hit the crossbar. Corps of Signals who had kicked off in the defensive mode, tried to rally for the equaliser and had a few chances. However, Pawan Thakur wasted an open chance, shooting wide from close range. In another tame effort for the Signals, Suklab Bordalai shot wide with only the rival goalkeeper to beat.
