Goan Football Club managed to register a solitary goal win over Churchill Brothers in the Goa Football Association Professional League under floodlights at Duler stadium, here today. After this victory, Goan FC have 32 points from 19 matches, while Churchill Brothers remain on 13 points from 13 matches.
It was disappointing to witness just a few spectators to watch what seems like one of the best matches in this season’s Pro-League as both teams played with a number of ISL and I-League players.
Churchill Brothers, who had lost their last league match to Calangute Association by 1-0 margin, and Goan FC, having drawn against SCC Cavelossim 1-1 in their previous match, came out today with a positive mindset of clinching full points. Both the coaches having multiple choices with the return of their top players, fielded their best side each in today’s match.
As expected, in the very 4th minute; the Young Gaurs opened their account with Kingslee Fernandes sending a low cross from an acute angle, which brushed the hand of rival goalkeeper Ricardo Cardozo at the first post before the ball travelled to an unmarked Krishna Pandit. The last-named tapped the ball into the open goal.
The Red Machine came close to levelling the terms in the 13th minute where a header from Alber Gonsalves off a free-kick by Yendrenbam Metei, missed the target. In the 21st minute, Kingslee Fernandes moved from the right flank and drilled a power-packed right-footer, which was superbly blocked by goalkeeper Ricardo and off the rebound, Kingslee’s strike hit the side-netting. The Red Machine trailing by a goal, went all out in search of the equaliser with their two foreign signings, Nigerian Francis Onayema and Trinidadian Willis Plaza.
