New entrants Churchill Brothers started with a solitary goal win over Goa Velha in the inaugural match of the GFA Vedanta Women’s League 2018-19 organized by Goa Football Association played under floodlights here on Thursday.
Before the start of the match, all the participating teams were welcomed by GFA President Elvis Gomes, while Sapna Sapho, AIFF-in charge of women’s development declared the second edition open in the presence of GFA’s Vice President Lavino Rebello, Schubert Furtado,
Juliana Colaco, chairperson for the women’s league and GFA committee members.
The first session was dominated by Churchill Brothers where they almost scored in the 14th minute through Lifa Tavares but her placement missed narrowly. However, in the 20th minute Lifa Tavares scored with a neat header where a lob shot from Michel Castanha’s rebounded off the post to make it 1-0.
On crossing ends, Goa Velha’s eves, who came with renewed ideas held the upper hand but the strikers failed to level terms. In the 53rd minute, Goa Velha’s Ansiva Vas goal-bound strike was blocked by Churchill defender Laura Estibeiro.
Anisiva had three good attempts at the Goa Velha goal but it was brilliant keeping by Churchill keeper Rima Gadekar who came to her teams rescue.
Goa Velha’s Ansiva Vas received the women’s match award from the hands of Elvis Gomes, GFA president and Juliana Colaco.
