A second minute goal from Yakubu Mohammed helped Guardian Angel Sports Club edge Corps of Signals in the Goa Pro League at Government Village School playground, Ambelim, on Thursday.
The first half was pretty exciting with Guardian Angel doing most of the attacking with the highlight being the sensational early goal when midfielder Esteven Mendes' goal-bound cross from the flanks kissed the horizontal bar and the rebound was headed in gleefully by striker Yukubu beyond Corps goalkeeper Niyas Mon.
Corps of Signals took time to settle down and had a golden chance to level the scores in the 32nd minute when hard-working Rohan Singh found midfielder L Solomon Khongsai near the rival penalty box but the latter's shot was well blocked by Guardian Angel goalkeeper Ram Sroop. The win takes Guardian Angel's tally in the league to 24 points from 17 matches while, with their eleventh loss Corps of Signals stay on 13 points from 18 matches.
Post resumption, Corps seemed to be a transformed side but they did not cash in on their efforts. On the other hand, Guardian Angel too nearly doubled the lead but Corps goalkeeper Niyas came to his team's rescue by fisting away Yakubu's strike after midfielder Esteven Mendes had laid the striker on the platter.
Corps had another chance to get the equaliser in the 65th minute when striker Pawan Kumar missed out in a one to one with Sroop after a good passing sequence with Larat Fela, who too later made a mess of a chance on goal. In the 78th minute , midfielder Khongsai had only goalkeeper Srop to beat but he could not delivered the goods off a well measured cross from Vishnu Chettri.
