Aahil Sheikh, a talented swimmer from Bicholim, who is studying at People’s High School, Panaji put up an outstanding performance at the recently held 27th National Deaf Senior Swimming Championship 2026 at Sardar Patel Stadium Swimming Pool in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Representing the Goa Sports Council for the Deaf, Aahil delivered an exceptional performance, winning four gold medals and setting two New National Meet Records (NMRs).
Aahil won a gold in 200m and 1500m freestyle with a new national meet record. Besides this, he also won a gold in 400m and 800m freestyle.
Aahil’s journey is one of determination and perseverance. A hearing-impaired child with a cochlear implant, initially Aahil faced significant challenges in communication and learning. His hyperactive nature made his early training even more challenging.
“On the advice of a family friend, Ma’am Aveline Dancho, swimming was introduced as a way to channel his energy. However, even stepping into the water was difficult at first, as Aahil was initially afraid,” Aahil’s father Noor Sheikh told The Goan.
“With the support of his school teacher, Ms. Sayali Prabhu Verlekar, at the Peddem Swimming Pool, Mapusa, Aahil gradually overcame his fear and began swimming with confidence. What started as a simple activity soon transformed into a serious passion,” Noor said.
“Throughout his journey, the staff at Peddem Swimming Pool and Campal Swimming Pool have consistently supported and guided him and continue to do so.”
Aahil’s success has come after hours and hours of relentless training and hard work.
“Aahil trains with remarkable discipline, spending nearly 5 to 6 hours daily in the pool. He trains in the morning between 5:00 AM to 7:30 AM at Peddem Swimming Pool, Mapusa and in the evening between 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Campal Swimming Pool, Panaji,” Noor Sheikh said.
Noor further added, “Despite communication challenges in the water, his coach, Sir Sujith T.A., has played a crucial role in helping him understand techniques and strategies effectively.”
Aahil’s journey has also been supported by several institutions - Happy Hearts (Pre-Primary School), Porvorim, Joedell’s Primary School, Khorlim, Mapusa, People’s High School, Panjim, Swimming Association of Goa and The Goa Sports Council for the Deaf.
“The encouragement and support from his schools, coaches, family, parents of fellow swimmers, and friends have played a vital role in his achievements,” Noor said.
Apart from swimming, Aahil has also participated in triathlons, aquathlons, and sea swimming events. Notably, he has represented Goa in the 5 km open water sea swimming event at the Khelo India Beach Games held in Diu in January 2026, successfully completing the race in the senior category within the stipulated time.
While excelling in swimming, Aahil has also maintained his academic commitments. This year, he has appeared for his Class X board examinations while continuing his rigorous training and competition schedule. With strong support from People’s High School and his coach, Aahil has successfully managed both.
A multi-talented individual, Aahil is also passionate about music. He plays the keyboard and is preparing for his Grade 5 examination under the guidance of his music teacher, Gauresh Parab.
Aahil Sheikh’s story is one of courage, resilience, and unwavering determination. His achievements serve as an inspiration to many, proving that with the right support, dedication, and perseverance, challenges can be transformed into remarkable success.
