Nine kayakers, all members of the Adventure Club, accompanied by two instructors successfully completed an open sea kayaking expedition from Keri-Tiracol to Morjim on Sunday, November 29. They completed a gruelling 19.5km distance in just over 7 hours. They were accompanied by a sailboat provided by the Goa Yachting Association.

The kayakers set out from the beach near the Keri ferry ramp for Tiracol Fort at 7.45 am. They paddled their way out of the Tiracol River into the open sea. A Goa Marine Police inflatable motorboat from the Tiracol Marine Police Station escorted them till the river mouth. Then, the kayakers headed southwards down the coast, past the Keri, Arambol, Mandrem, Ashwem and Morjim beaches, till the Chapora River.

Entry into the Chapora River was extremely difficult, as the full-moon spring tide was flowing out of the river in full mid-cycle ebb. However, thanks to rigorous training, all the kayakers managed to reach the mouth of the river successfully.

The participating kayakers were Nihal Sayed, Adarsh Roy, Reju Skaria, Sasha D’Lima, Khushi Gupta, Saachi Gupta, Gaurav Gupta, Saurabh Dubey and Swapneel Loya. Ashwin Tombat and Prashant Prakash were the instructors. Back-up personnel were Kim Sabir, Nathan Braganza, Noor Reddy and Sandeep Chunekar.

This was the first trial leg of an ambitious bid to carry out a week-long kayaking expedition to paddle the entire length of the Goa coast later in 2021.
