Agxem Sports Club secured a thrilling victory over Eklate FC, booking their place in the semifinals of the 9-a-side football tournament organized by Sporting Club Virabhat. The action unfolded at St. Alex Church ground, Curtorim, on Wednesday.
Eklate drew first blood in the fifth minute. Vicky Cardozo found the back of the net, putting pressure on the Agxem defense. However, Agxem responded swiftly. A foul just outside the box in Agxem's favor presented an opportunity. Nickson Castanah stepped up to the free kick and delivered a clinical strike, leaving the Eklate goalkeeper helpless. Before the half-time whistle, Agxem took the lead through Alroy Gomes, making the score 2-1.
Eklate came out strong in the second half, desperate for an equaliser. Joy Hilario had a golden chance but his shot went wide. At the other end, Agxem capitalised on a counter-attack. Nickson Castanah unleashed a powerful left-footed shot from outside the box, finding the net and extending Agxem's lead to 3-1.
Eklate mounted pressure in the dying minutes, searching for a consolation goal. However, a combination of Agxem's resolute defense and strong goalkeeping ensured they held onto their lead. Elroy Gomes of Agxem was adjudged as the Man of the Match and was awarded by Stanley Fernandes.
