The Gokuldas S Shirodker Trust in collaboration with various sports bodies in Goa, organised the All-Goa Kho Kho League which was held at Cuncolim ground, recently.
Five teams participated in the tournament, with Dream Squad and Sai Sports Club emerging as finalists. Dream Squad emerged victorious clinching the trophy and a cash prize of Rs 25,000. Sai Sports Club secured the runner-up position receiving a trophy and Rs 15,000. Individual awards were also presented with Sarino Fernandes winning the best attacker trophy and Rs 1,000, Aviram Kakodkar bagging the best defender trophy and Rs. 1,000, and Deepak Velip being named the best all rounder.
The event paid tribute to Former Sports Minister Gokuldas Shirodkar for his immense contribution to promoting indigenous games like kho kho in the state. Several dignitaries including Digambar Kamat (Ex CM of Goa), Yuri Alemao (MLA of Cuncolim), and Dharma Chodankar (Ex MLA), spoke at the ceremony highlighting Shirodkar's dedication to reviving and nurturing Kho Kho, particularly in rural areas.
The event served as a platform to advocate for the revival and promotion of kho kho. Speakers highlighted the importance of sports in keeping youth healthy and combating lifestyle diseases.
The Trust felicitated individuals who have significantly contributed to kho kho in Goa. Senior technical officer Lima Luis, former players Uday Velip, Khushali Velip, Prashant Velip, Nativedade Fernandes, and Savita Velip were honored for their acheivements.
Several speakers also emphasized the importance of promoting the game at the grassroots level and providing opportunities for talented players, especially from rural areas.
