MARGAO: Bethany Convent got the better of Rosary HS Navelim in the first semifinal of the Founders Cup 2024 U-17 boys' 9-a-side football tournament, at Chinchinim Church ground.
Both teams displayed attacking intent, but strong defenses initially kept the scoreboard clear. In the 10th minute, Afzal Bandari capitalised on a corner from Messi Rebello to head Rosary HS into the lead.
The second half saw a shift in momentum. Bethany Convent equalised quickly through Josley Gomes. However, Rosary HS responded with two quick goals from Afzal Bandari, putting them ahead 3-1. Bethany Convent refused to give up. Josley Gomes emerged as the hero, scoring a hat-trick in quick succession to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory for his team. Josley Gomes' outstanding performance earned him the player of the match award.
The second semi-final was a one-sided affair. Perpetual Succour Convent dominated Manovikas School, cruising to a convincing 5-0 win. Jade Pires opened the scoring for Perpetual Succour in the eighth minute. Touzfique Gundar then doubled the lead with two goals, followed by strikes from Vernon Cardozo and Akron Fernandes. Manovikas School fought hard in the second half but couldn't break through Perpetual Succour's strong defense. Touzfique Gundar's impressive performance earned him the player of the match award.
