Caitano Fernandes, president of Tuem FC filed his nomination for the president's post in the upcoming Goa Football Association (GFA) election. Fernandes is a member of Goa State Football Development Council.
"Football is the best game, football is in our blood. Why can't we have a Bruno Coutinho, Catao Fernandes, Bramanand Shanvalkar, Mauricio Afonso, Mahesh Lotlikar from Goa," he said after filing his nomination and stressing to bring past glory back to the state. Fernandes said the GFA should make use of retired football coaches and other professionals to help budding talent.
“There’s no dearth of talent. But we have failed to nurture these talents by providing them the basic facilities,” he pointed out.
He observed that the state has very good existing sports infrastructures, which need to be utilised to the optimum. He also said that he will request the government to allow four football grounds, two in North Goa and two in South Goa. He noted that once Goa was known as a powerhouse in football but the sad story was that Goa lost to Gujarat, who was not known in the soccer arena and bowed out of the championship in the west zone qualifying round.
Speaking further, he said: "My aim is to bring past glory back. When we were in power, there is no denying that decisions were taken to help us."
Fernandes congratulated Maria Rebello who has been appointed as Referee Assessor for the upcoming U-17 Women's World Cup. "She made us and our State proud," Fernandes concluded.
Police inspector files nomination for South Goa GFA vice president post
MARGAO: Police inspector Filomeno Costa, Colva Police Station on Thursday filed his nomination for the post of South Goa GFA vice president. He played hockey for Mumbai University and also played for his village club. As a organiser, Costa excelled in organising various sports activities. "We need new faces in the GFA to add new dynamism," remarked Costa.
