The Goan football community is mourning the passing of Antonio Almeida, popularly known as “Joe Boy,” a respected referee and devoted football administrator. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Almeida began his refereeing journey in 1983 and steadily rose through the ranks to become a National Referee, officiating in top-tier competitions including the U-21 National League in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and several high-profile fixtures in the Goa Professional League.
Even after retiring from active refereeing, he continued serving the game as a Match Commissioner, lending his experience to support the development of football in Goa.
Beyond refereeing, Almeida was deeply involved with Clube São Miguel de Taleigao, serving as a Life Member and the club’s Vice President. Professionally, he worked as a Senior Stenographer in the courts.
Paying tribute, Anthony Pango, Senior Vice President of the Goa Football Association, said, “It is truly sad to hear that Almeida is no more. His invaluable contribution to Indian football will always remain with us. I share the grief.”
Angelo Albuquerque, team manager of Sporting Clube de Goa, recalled, “As Ilhas Zone organiser, Almeida was a hardworking referee who never said no when it came to officiating crucial or deciding matches.”
Levino Anthony Pereira, President of Clube São Miguel de Taleigao, added, “He was an active member who helped the club in organising events and tournaments. We will miss his presence.”
Anjelo Fernandes, reflecting on their journey together, shared, “We were three Goans who became National Referees together ” Antonio Almeida, Edwin Fernandes, and myself. We worked hard to reach that level.”
