Quepem taluka is beaming with pride as Ambaulim’s own Lesvin Rebello, a member of the India Under-17 boys football team, played a key role in the side’s impressive 2-1 victory over higher-ranked Iran in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup.
Rebello’s football journey began at a young age with the GFDC Cuncolim Centre, a respected grassroots programme. His talent was evident from the start, and after strong performances in trials, he earned a spot in the FC Goa junior team. He now trains at the club’s academy and has already earned a promotion to the FC Goa Development Squad.
The youngster carries big dreams. Rebello aspires to follow in the footsteps of his idol, Sandesh Jhingan, the FC Goa senior team defender, admired for his fearless style and creativity. Coaches and supporters who have tracked Rebello’s rise say he already displays the confidence and technical skill needed to reach professional heights. He also looks up to Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr.
For Indian football, Rebello’s rise is a feel-good story ” a reminder that talent from Quepem’s grassroots can shine brightly on the national stage. With FC Goa now shaping his development, he is undoubtedly a name to watch in the coming years.
Speaking to The Goan Everyday, Rebello said he felt proud to continue his journey with FC Goa, calling the club his “home” and thanking the coaches and staff for their continuous support. He added that he is ready to shoulder more responsibility and give his best for the club and its fans.
Rebello, who was part of the India Under-17 squad at the recently concluded championship in Gujarat, received a rousing welcome from his home village of Ambaulim for doing the state proud.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire team for their outstanding performance,” said Pango, senior vice-president of the Goa Football Association.
“We are immensely proud of the contributions of our very own Bibiano Fernandes, India’s Under-17 head coach, and Lesvin Rebello, player-manager. Their dedication and guidance have been instrumental in shaping the team into a success,” he added.
