The newly elected Executive Committee of Cuncolim Union has a huge task at hand on the sporting front as well as off the field.
The new committee members said the mandate given to them is for the lack of work carried out by the outgoing one. Cuncolim Municipality councillor Vishal Dessai, who is one of the two elected civic body representatives, who feature in the EC and who has been elected as the president, said that they have many things planned in the pipeline, not only for football but other games as well.
“We will deliberate and decide on what we need to do for basketball, volleyball and cricket,” said Vishal, who was a junior State-level volleyball player. He said he entered the contest at the behest of former police officer Sammy Tavares and said they would work on restoring the football playing area and the clubhouse.
“Both the clubhouse and the football ground are in bad shape and we will decide on what needs to be done, and accordingly take a call on the two issues,” added the councillor, who is a member of the BJP party.
Former Tavares, who is a mentor to the panel, said the outgoing body was not holding the general body meetings and for the last five years, no membership drive was conducted. “We will start a membership drive and recruit new members,” said Tavares.
Asked about the Cuncolim Union sports complex and the allegations of irregularities in the construction works under the FRANCIS scheme of the Goa government, Tavares said a special general body meeting will be convened to decide on the matter. “The immediate priority of the new EC is to take occupancy certificate for the Cuncolim Union sports complex, which surprisingly was not taken by the outgoing body.”
