Calangute Association emerged victorious, edging out Guardian Angel Sports Club 2-1 in a thrilling encounter of the GFA Professional League at the SAG Trinity Ground, Benaulim on Sunday. The first half saw both teams level at 1-1, leaving everything to play for in the second.
Calangute started brightly, taking the lead in the 28th minute through a deft finish from defender Dangmel Gaiipulan. Guardian Angel responded with increased pressure, eventually finding an equaliser in the 45th minute courtesy of Joel Baretto's well-placed shot. Calangute's high-pressing tactics troubled Guardian Angel throughout the first half, but the halftime whistle arrived with the scores level.
The second half commenced with a frenetic pace as both teams went on the offensive in search of the winner. Chances fell at both ends, but resolute defending kept the scoresheet unchanged.
With 25 minutes remaining, Jovito Fernandes broke the deadlock, firing Calangute ahead to spark elation amongst their supporters. Stung by the late blow, Guardian Angel threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, but Calangute's defence stood firm, frustrating their attacks and securing the three points.
