India’s preparations for the upcoming AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup in China have been marked by quiet confidence, built on a series of competitive friendlies and a clear objective ” securing qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
The Young Tigresses have shown promise in recent months. Competing as an under-17 side, they clinched the SAFF U-19 Women's Championship title in February. They followed it up with two wins against Myanmar in Yangon in March, before facing a stern test against Russia in Sochi, where they suffered defeats earlier this month.
Goalkeeping coach Mario Luis Aguiar believes the exposure has strengthened both belief and balance within the squad.
“We are confident about the girls. They have gone through good-quality friendlies. The team is upbeat and raring to go,” Aguiar told The Goan Everyday from China.
The qualification scenario is straightforward. All eight quarterfinalists will book a place in the World Cup later this year, but India will aim for a top-two finish in Group D to avoid relying on permutations involving third-placed teams.
“Yes, that’s a goal and it’s not beyond our reach. I hope the girls will be able to pull this off,” Aguiar added.
India’s build-up has been deliberate, with the squad travelling across multiple countries to test themselves against diverse playing styles and conditions ” a strategy aimed at preparing them for the demands of continental competition.
A former goalkeeper who represented clubs like Dempo SC and Churchill Brothers, Aguiar brings vast experience to the setup. He has previously served with India’s coaching staff, including during the FIFA U-17 World Cup, and continues to play a key role in youth development as an All India Football Federation instructor.
Looking ahead to the tournament, Aguiar identified traditional powerhouses Australia and Japan as major threats, but remains optimistic about India’s chances.
He also singled out goalkeeper Munni Thapa for special praise, highlighting her sharp reflexes and composure under the bar as key strengths for the team heading into the competition.
