Sao Jose de Areal SC secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Guirdolim Club to book their spot in the semifinals of the 2nd Fr. Bruno Leitao Memorial Cup 2024, organised by the Union of Chinchinim Villagers, at Chinchinim Church ground.
Sao Jose de Areal wasted no time, with Raymond Fernandes scoring in the opening minute after dribbling past Guirdolim defenders. They continued their offensive push, earning a free kick near the penalty area in the 26th minute. Again, it was Fernandes who stepped up, firing the ball past the Guirdolim goalkeeper for a commanding 2-0 lead. Guirdolim threatened briefly with Bersal Viegas' well-executed shot saved by their goalkeeper, but the first half ended 2-0 in Areal's favor.
The second half saw a resurgent Guirdolim. They regrouped and pressed forward, earning a penalty in the 30th minute after Moises D'Sa was brought down inside the box. Alreach Peixioto converted from the spot to narrow the deficit. However, Areal responded quickly with two goals in quick succession “ Bersal Viegas and Vanael Travasso finding the net in the 30th and 31st minutes respectively, restoring their three-goal advantage (4-1).
Guirdolim refused to give up. They capitalised on defensive lapses by Areal, scoring two more goals through Akram Yadwad (44th minute) and Mario Fernandes (54th minute). Despite their valiant effort, they couldn't find the equaliser, and Sao Jose de Areal held on to their lead.
Raymond Fernandes was awarded the player of the match trophy presented by Piedade Fernandes, Panch member of Village Panchayat Chinchinim-Deussua.
