CANACONA
St. Anne’s Institute (SAI), Agonda emerged victorious in the South District U-14 Girls Football Tournament, organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA), defeating Perpetual Succour Convent, Navelim in a thrilling final at the DSYA ground, Dramapur.
After a goalless draw in regular time, the match was decided in a tie-breaker, where SAI, Agonda clinched a 3-2 win to lift the championship trophy. Both teams displayed excellent skill and determination, but strong defending and brilliant goalkeeping kept the scores level throughout the 60 minutes. Several attempts by strikers were either saved by goalkeepers or thwarted by the goalposts, keeping fans on edge until the tie-breaker.
In the shootout, Saima Pagui, Uriel Fernandes, and Valaika Monteiro converted their penalties for SAI, while Sancia Fernandes and Alaina Vaz scored for Perpetual Succour Convent. Crucial saves by SAI goalkeeper Suhani Messy during the tie-breaker ultimately secured the victory for her team.
This triumph adds to SAI, Agonda’s recent success in the District (South) U-17 Girls Championship, making them the first school in Canacona taluka to win both the U-17 and U-14 District (South) Girls titles organised by DSYA.
The team, trained by Coach and P.E. Teacher Angelo Silva, celebrated their achievement with Joaquim Pereira, Secretary of Dramapur Sports Club, APEO Salcete Bevlyn Colaco, and other officials. SAI Headmaster Cedric Monteiro and Manager Rev. Fr. Patrick Luis congratulated the players and coach on this proud accomplishment.
