Cuncolim Union stormed into the quarterfinals of the 8th Martin’s Cup football tournament, organised by Betalbatim Sporting Club, with a 6–5 tiebreaker win over Ambelim Sports Club at the Panchayat ground, Betalbatim, on Friday.
The teams remained locked at 0–0 during regulation time. Ambelim’s Brian Fernandes squandered a golden chance to seal the match, and in injury time, Viraj Velip set up substitute Daulat Dessai, whose shot went off target.
In the decisive shootout, Cuncolim Union converted through Frazer Fernandes, Viraj Velip, Ansh Patil, Shanon Gauncar, Vinod Velip and Tushar Gaonkar. Ambelim replied via Velroy Fernandes, Brian Fernandes, Nash Pinto, Figo Noronha and Asfin Pinto.
Bonny Pereira, former president of Betalbatim Sporting Club, presented the Man of the Match award to Cuncolim’s Viraj Velip.
