Goa were held to a 1-1 draw by Lakshadweep in their second match of the 79th Santosh Trophy Group Stage Round, a game that Goa largely controlled but failed to put beyond reach despite creating multiple clear chances.

After a heavy defeat in their opening fixture, Goa showed a clear response in both intent and organisation, asserting themselves early and dictating large phases of play. Selwyn Miranda nearly provided the perfect start in the 15th minute, curling a free kick just wide of the target. The momentum continued as Goa’s defence reacted sharply three minutes later to snuff out Lakshadweep’s best early opportunity.

Goa’s attacking pressure grew steadily. Lloyd Cardozo squandered a promising opening in the 19th minute when he found space inside the box but failed to hit the target. The clearest chance of the half arrived in the 27th minute when Pratik Naik’s incisive pass released Arnold Oliveira through on goal. Oliveira struck well, only to be denied by an alert Mohammed Shaik.

The breakthrough finally came in first-half stoppage time through a move that reflected Goa’s growing confidence. Arnold Oliveira initiated the attack before Lloyd Cardozo slipped a composed pass into Selwyn Miranda’s path who finished decisively to give Goa a deserved 1-0 lead at the break. Moments later, Pratik Naik had a chance to double the advantage, but his effort drifted narrowly wide.

Goa continued to push after the restart, with Joshua D’Silva coming close in the 62nd minute only to be denied by a well-organised Lakshadweep defence. However, against the flow of the game, Lakshadweep found an equaliser in the 65th minute, capitalising on a rare defensive lapse to level the score.

The response from Goa was immediate. Just two minutes later, Denil Rebello found himself with a clear sight of goal but could not convert, summing up a frustrating noon where chances came but finishing deserted them.

Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, Goa were unable to find the winning goal, and the match ended 1-1.
