MARGAO
Goans Hockey celebrated National Sports Day on August 29, 2025, with a vibrant event held at the Peddem Sports Complex, aligning with this year’s national theme — “Sport to Promote Peaceful Societies.” The three-day celebration, part of a nationwide initiative in collaboration with the Fit India Mission, honored the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of India's greatest hockey players.
The event embraced the Fit India initiative’s call to action: “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Mein” (One Hour on the Sports Field), drawing hockey enthusiasts from across Goa for a day of sportsmanship and community spirit.
The celebration began with a friendly exhibition hockey match, which featured players across all age groups—from sub-juniors to veterans. Prominent participants included Mr. Felix, a former Olympian; Mr. Swapnil Haldankar, captain of the Goa Senior Men’s Team; and Miss Riddhi Hadfadkar, captain of the State Sub-Junior Team. The match showcased the depth of talent and passion for hockey in the state.
Following the game, a formal function was held to reflect on the significance of the day. Brendan delivered remarks on the importance of National Sports Day, while Praanjali Halankar presented an insightful talk on the life and legacy of Major Dhyan Chand. The event was attended by Abhay Bhamaikar, President of Goans Hockey, and Elliter Fernandes, coach with the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG).
The celebration concluded with an informal fellowship session, encouraging players, coaches, and community members to engage in open discussions about the future of hockey in Goa. The gathering promoted camaraderie and collective thinking on how to strengthen the sport’s grassroots in the state.
The event was coordinated by Goans Hockey EC Member Manoj Pednekar, along with official Aviraj Madgaonkar and EC Member Praanjali Halankar, whose efforts ensured the success of the program.
Goans Hockey expressed its appreciation to all participants, supporters, and volunteers for making the event memorable. The association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting hockey across Goa and continues to encourage all citizens to lead active, healthy lifestyles through sport.
