SPOTLIGHT | As Congress struggles, GFP signals a more assertive role

MARGAO
On World Environment Day, Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai made a politically significant observation, saying it would be in the Opposition's interest if the ongoing turmoil within the Congress came to an end at the earliest.
Sardesai, however, was equally emphatic that the regional party is not prepared to wait for the Congress to resolve its internal crisis before charting its own political course. That’s not all. He went on to assert that the party possesses the strength and wherewithal to challenge and potentially dislodge the BJP from power in Goa in the 2027 Assembly elections.
A closer reading of Sardesai's remarks suggests three clear messages. First, the Goa Forward Party hopes that the crisis affecting its alliance partner is resolved sooner rather than later in the larger interest of the Opposition. Second, and perhaps more significantly, the regional outfit is signalling that it is prepared to take on the BJP's political machinery irrespective of the Congress' internal situation. Third, the party appears set to expand its political footprint ahead of the 2027 polls.
Expanding beyond alliance politics
The Goa Forward Party has been working to strengthen its organisation across the State with an eye on playing a larger role in the next Assembly elections. This indicates that the party may no longer be content with contesting only a handful of seats allocated by the Congress under any alliance arrangement.
Against this backdrop, the party's recent decision to constitute 10 constituency-level blocks in the first phase assumes considerable significance. The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the organisation in as many as 25 Assembly constituencies.
While sections within the Congress have sought to dismiss Goa Forward's organisational expansion as a pressure tactic aimed at securing a larger share of seats in 2027, the developments raise a larger political question. Can the Congress effectively manage the Goa Forward factor if relations between the two parties deteriorate and the regional outfit decides to contest independently in the 2027 Assembly elections?
No response from Congress
Earlier this year, the Goa Forward Party reportedly submitted a set of proposals to the Congress high command outlining possible strategies to strengthen the Opposition and mount a united challenge to the BJP.
Although the details of the proposals remain undisclosed, political circles were abuzz with speculation that the regional party was even open to the possibility of merging with the Congress as part of a broader effort to consolidate Opposition forces against the ruling BJP.
Sources, however, claim that the Congress high command has yet to formally respond to the proposals. On the contrary, a section of the Congress leadership is believed to be strongly opposed to any merger proposal or to Sardesai's return to the Congress fold, citing political considerations and individual aspirations.
In this context, the Goa Forward Party's overt and covert efforts to strengthen its organisational base acquire added significance. With the Congress yet to clarify its position and internal differences continuing to persist, the regional outfit appears set on a course to strengthen its political capacity while keeping its options open ahead of the 2027 electoral battle.
